Bishop Allen
Posted: November 7, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a comment »Okay, so chances are that you haven’t heard much about Bishop Allen – and no, the name does not tie into any religious aspect. The indie pop/rock group, fronted by Justin Rice and Christian Rudder with the support of a rotating cast of musicians, first came together back in 2003 when they produced Charm School. The album starts off with “Charm School,” a catchy song resembling the sound of a 60′s tune. Bishop Allen gets a bit more mellow with “Eve of Destruction,” while keeping a smooth, pop-like tone. Perhaps one of the more catchier tracks on the album is “Penitentiary Bound,” an upbeat sing-along of handclaps and sweet melodies. In 2006, Bishop Allen took an ambitious approach with their monthly EP project. The band self-released a total of 58 songs in that given year, some of which were rerecorded into their highly acclaimed record The Broken String. The album features an eclectic mix of instruments and the same quirky pop style that is Bishop Allen. Their latest release, Grrr…, checks in with another collection of diverse instrumental sound and clever lyrics. “Dimmer” and “Cue the Elephants” are just two of the album’s tracks offering witty, artistic bliss. Bishop Allen’s the epitome of indie pop – not too fond with the mainstream crowd, but enough potential to make the charts.
Tilly And The Wall

Joyous sound – check. Bursts of on-stage enthusiasm – check. Perfect boy/girl harmony – check. Drums – …drums? That’s right. Forget the loud and boisterous percussion set, Tilly and the Wall breaks out their beats with a tap dancer. This band is like nothing you’ve ever heard before, or seen for that matter. I’ve seen a countless number of bands perform, and without a doubt, Tilly and the Wall was the best I’ve ever seen. It’s hype, lights, colors, balloons and confetti all in one show. Sounds like a typical concert? Perhaps so, but the whimsical lyrics, upbeat tune and carefree lifestyle of Tilly and the Wall makes it much more enjoyable.

Talk about that Canadian love – these boys know music. The indie-rockers have been bringing their high-energy and quirky personalities to the music scene since they first formed as a band back in 2005. Through subtle hooks and captivating lyrics, Tokyo Police Club has slowly, but surely been making their way into the popular crowd. Their latest album, Ten Songs, Ten Years, Ten Days, just released in October 2011, features an ambitious turn for Tokyo Police Club as they covered ten songs from the last decade in just ten days – hence the title. Remember that hit song “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson? And what about that song “Sweetness” by Jimmy Eat World? Tokyo Police Club covered them both. Get a sense of their fun, punchy style and give them a listen.
